USAIR Follows AA in Fees and Cancelling Flights

Just wanted to let you know that I just received this information through sources. This has just been posted to their investor relations site:

USAir will implement 1st bag check fee of $15 ala AA

They will also implement beverages for a charge and alcoholic drinks will be raised from $5 to $7

They are reducing their workforce by 1,700 employees

and are also reducing LV flights per bulletin:

';Effective Sept. 3, the airline%26#39;s Las

Vegas night operation will be closed, except for limited night

service to the East Coast. Historically, both pre-merger America

West Airlines and today%26#39;s US Airways have operated an extensive

late-night operation in Las Vegas. However, due to the high cost

of fuel, the revenue generated from the Las Vegas night operation

no longer exceeds the incremental cost of that flying. As a

result, the airline will park those planes overnight, as it does

for the majority of its fleet in other markets. Overall, daily

departures from Las Vegas, which were as high as 141 during Sept.

2007, will drop to 81 with the Sept. 3, 2008 schedule change. The

airline%26#39;s Las Vegas daily departures will drop further to

approximately 74 by the end of 2008 as aircraft are retired from

the fleet.';

Figured you guys should know.

USAIR Follows AA in Fees and Cancelling Flights

The reduced Vegas flight information is actually old news, but you might want to post the other infor here;

tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g1-i10702-Airlines…

Great info. We have 2 USAir trips booked to Vegas latter this year, but both are earlier in the day. A USA Today story a few weeks hinted at this. They were saying these flights were only 50% full. But this will make the earlier flights busier and will naturally allow them to raise rates.

But I guess with fuel like it is they deserve to make a profit too.

I have a flight over Thanksgiving that they changed my return time- I loose 3 hours in LV, hopefully they wont change time again since this is Thanksgiving and alternate flights may not be possible.

My last flight on them had a lot of carry ons and with them charging for first bag getting overhead is going to be a nightmare.

airlines, and all businesses, should and will, adjust the business plan as necessary.

Decades ago soft drinks were .25 on some airlines, snacks were .50 - nothing free.

The # of flights at any airport is always able to be changed. There isn%26#39;t an airport that has the exact # of flights it did years ago. Some small sirports may cease service.

Change happens - always has, always will.

With the internet pax can and should check the airlines website regularly.

Years ago we had to depend on - DREAD - a phone call, on a land line, a roatry phone with another party sharing!! Yikes. Yes, we survived as so will everyone else flying these days.

Hey Bridgey, was your first commercial flight on a Ford Tri-Motor or a more modern DC-3?

Just curious.

I%26#39;ll bet if we put our heads together, we can help the airlines get healthy. I have a few suggestions.

People have already mentioned a per minute charge for use of the bathrooms and other things. Here are some other things to consider.

1. The oxygen mask that pops down in case of sudden decompression should be sold as insurance. Pre-takeoff price-$2.00. If you have a need for it during flight and you didn%26#39;t ';pre-buy--cost $19.99 (exact change only).

1a. Pillow/blankets-they have to share one each per row. 75 cent charge for laundry.

1c. Give them the option of purchasing in flight first aid assistance-$5. If they don%26#39;t pre purchase the insurance and thy need it in flight-cost jumps to $99.99. Exact change required.

2. Save weight by providing only one floating device per row. They can play Rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to use it.

3. Too much fuel is spent when they taxi to the terminal. Let the passengers get off as soon as the plane stops. They want a ride to the terminal--two dollars, five dollars if they have luggage.

4. New passengers will have to find their way to to where the plane stopped on the runway. Ok, the plane will clear the runway a little bit. Again, charge them to get there if the need a ride, extra for luggage.

5. Confiscate all food as the passenger enter the plane. Then circulate Cinna Bon aroma throughout the plane after takeoff.

I%26#39;m getting tired but what do you think--will it ';fly';

United just announced they also will charge $15 for the first bag, $25 for the second. Fee is just for the huddled masses, their elite flyers don%26#39;t have to pay. This is why I fly SW.
