First day we got to our hotel, MGM Signature, around 1 and once we got settled we wanted to catch a bite to eat and I had to place a few horse race bets. So we went over to NY NY and got drinking a couple beers and then did some exploring on the strip. Walked quite a bit and then went back to the room to get ready for dinner. It was our 5 year anniversary and we booked Top of the World because my wife had never been to Vegas and we did not fly in or out at night so she could see the lights. Got there right around sunset and the view was spectacular – and it was all downhill from there!! My wife ordered a glass of wine and I had a beer, she orders the lobster bisque and the Chilean sea bass with a side of asparagus. I order the ribeye and a side of garlic mashed. Lobster bisque comes out and Lys says ‘its fine’ which I know right away it’s not so good then by her tone. She says it’s really blah and says there was like 3 pieces of lobster in it. OK maybe the meal will make up for it – no dice. Sea Bass has good flavor she says but then hits slime!!!! Tries to pick at it but cannot – it’s raw. My steak is cooked perfect – until I hit the second half of it – over cooked. She sends the fish back and says she has lost appetite and does not need a new piece. They offer a desert but we don’t take that either – just disappointed all around. Service was top notch and they did try to make up for the fish. View was spectacular. But service and the view did not make up for the food. I left steak on my plate – that does not happen often and it wasn’t because I was stuffed. They did take the fish off the bill but it was still 135 without the fish!! One drink a piece. Don’t mind paying that much for food if it is top notch – but this was anything but.
The next day we were up early – 6 AM so we got ready and were out the door by 7 to find some breakfast. Then we explored more in the afternoon and were back in the room by 5 ish to get ready for the show that night. Went to the David Copperfield show and we were in the 3rd row. Excellent seats. He was unbelievable. You would think sitting that close you could catch some of the things he was doing – nope. So at one point he needs people to come on stage to help with a trick – he pulls my wife and another woman on stage to help with a trick!! The wife is shaking she is so nervous up there. Well then the trick involved a poisonous scorpion!! After the show we went to Sea Blue. Well apparently they didn’t know how to cook a fish either – it was a tad underdone again for Lyssa!! Maybe it’s just how they do it out there but I don’t think so. My steak was good – not melt in your mouth good but it was good. The best thing they had there were Lobster Corndogs – I know it sounds weird but they were excellent.
Next day we decided no more fancy restaurants for us while we were out there. So we did our exploring starting around 10 or so and we were going to go to the Wynn. We were going to try the buffet after getting the Red Cards but they had us spin for the %26#39;reward%26#39; and we ended up with 10 slot play each and no buffet - maybe I didn%26#39;t know exactly what I needed to do for the buffets - no clue. Oh well. That night we had tickets to go and see Mystere – it was EXCELLENT. Funny and amazing and I don’t know how those people do those things.
All in all we had a great time. Realized we should just hit the normal restaurants or ask the cab drivers and bar tenders for their advise on restaurants. Every cab driver or bartender told us that they could have let us know not to go to the Top of the World. They said the view was amazing but the food wasn%26#39;t very good. Hit many bars - too many to list here. Shows were amazing and overall a wonderful time and we will be going back sometime in the near future!!
Trip ReportGlad you had a great time apart from some of your dining experiences. Sorry to hear your anniversary meal was a let down, now know not to go for a meal at The top of the world.
Trip ReportInteresting review of Top of the World. We had considered spending the bucks to eat there on our anniversary, but don%26#39;t think we will now. Wonder if we could just go in the restaurant for a drink or a dessert and appreciate the view? They probably save the great view tables for dinner customers though. That would make sense if they%26#39;re busy, but if they%26#39;re not?
There is a lounge just above the ToW restuarant where you can have a drink and enjoy the view. I too heard the food was not worth the $$$. We enjoyed the lounge.
restaurant;)
I always appreciate honesty in regards to restaurants, so thank-you. People always say don%26#39;t go to a ';chain'; while in Vegas even if it is an upscale one, but usually chains have a consistency that you don%26#39;t see in the fancier places. I like to split my time in between both and I always love a good ';dive'; if the food is great!
I too am a believer in the dive places have the best food!! Not that it was a dive but Diablo%26#39;s between the NY NY and the Monte Carlo was very good food. The Top of the World has the Romance Lounge where you can have a drink and enjoy the view and it looked as if they sectioned off tables for 2 so you could enjoy your time with the person you were with. I don%26#39;t know that for sure though. I%26#39;m sure it would be excellent to have a drink as the service and the view were top notch.
How was the Signature? Staying there on our next trip. Thanks
Sorry about that - I guess I didn%26#39;t put anything in there about the hotel! The hotel was fabulous. Everything we expected and more. Room was big and great. Lots of room to put your cloths in drawers if you want or hang them, big TV, service top notch. When you waited for a cab they offered you chilled bottles of water while you waited. The coincierge booked all of our tickets for us and all of our dinner reservations. Very helpful. Should have took the recommendation for Craftsteak instead of their recommendation for Sea Blue though!! We were in tower 1 so our walk to the MGM was minimal. I don%26#39;t think it was even 5 mins - maybe 10 mins to get to the actual casino but it was not a big deal for us. We loved the fact that it was non smoking and since my wife likes to get away from the commotion of the casino%26#39;s it was ideal that they did not have a casino in the hotel. We would go back and stay at the Signature again - hands down. In fact I don%26#39;t know if my wife would even entertain offers to stay somewhere else.
That is a problem with fish these days - but then you don%26#39;t want them to overcook it until it is dry, either. Since I don%26#39;t like mine slimy, either, I say ';just opaque, but not overdone'; and it%26#39;s usually ok. They just assume everyone wants sushi - they don%26#39;t. But it wouldn%26#39;t have been a big deal for them to just take it back and cook it a little more.
Thanks for the TR! Sorry you didn%26#39;t have a better food experience......
